For our June Kurasu Coffee Subscription, we’re featuring two floral and refreshing coffees: Colombia Hermides Meneses Pink Bourbon Washed and Kenya Gatomboya AB Washed.
In this month’s video, Takuya from Kurasu is joined by Kyosuke, who works in HR and accounting at Kurasu, to taste and introduce the two coffees from the Kurasu office.
Together, they talk about the character of Pink Bourbon, what makes this Kenyan lot feel so classic, and the small coffee moments that happen in the Kurasu office kitchen — those everyday moments when someone says, “Shall we brew some coffee?”

Colombia Hermides Meneses Pink Bourbon Washed
Colombia Hermides Meneses Pink Bourbon Washed comes from La Esperanza farm in Tarqui, Huila, Colombia, and is produced by Hermides Meneses.
This is the first time Kurasu has purchased coffee from Hermides. His farm is located in a mountainous area with distinct microclimates, where the climate can change dramatically even within a short distance. Today, Hermides grows only Pink Bourbon on his farm, focusing on this variety with careful, hands-on work.
In the video, Takuya and Kyosuke talk about the floral character of Pink Bourbon, its sweet-and-citric profile, and the genetic background that is said to trace back to Ethiopian landrace varieties.
In the cup, this coffee is floral, gentle, and smooth, with notes of blood orange, berries, green tea, and a soft, mellow sweetness. As it cools, it opens up beautifully with an orange tea-like character and a deep, tea-like finish.
Tasting impressions
- Floral and gentle aromatics
- Blood orange and berry-like fruitiness
- Green tea-like comfort in the finish
- Smooth mouthfeel and mellow sweetness
- Orange tea-like character as it cools
Kenya Gatomboya AB Washed
Kenya Gatomboya AB Washed comes from the Gatomboya washing station in Kenya and is made up of SL28 and SL34 varieties.
AB refers to the bean size grade in Kenya. While AA is the largest grade, AB follows closely behind and often brings a beautiful balance of clarity, structure, and drinkability.
This lot has the delicacy you might expect from an AB grade, while still offering a satisfying body and a classic Kenyan fruit character. In the video, Takuya and Kyosuke talk about the difference between SL28 and SL34, the increasing presence of varieties like Batian and Ruiru 11 in Kenya, and what makes this lot feel like a truly classic Kenyan coffee.
In the cup, you’ll find grapefruit, redcurrant, berry, and tomato-like fruitiness, along with a tea-like elegance reminiscent of Darjeeling tea with brown sugar. It is refreshing, expressive, and enjoyable both hot and iced — a perfect coffee for the rainy season.
Tasting impressions
- Grapefruit and redcurrant-like brightness
- Berry and tomato-like fruit character
- Darjeeling tea-like elegance
- Brown sugar-like sweetness
- Clear, refreshing, and expressive cup profile
Brewing recipe from the video
In the video, Takuya brews the coffees using a FLO Dripper with a simple three-pour recipe.
| Dripper | FLO Dripper |
|---|---|
| Coffee | 12.5g |
| Water | 200g |
| Water temperature | 90°C |
| Pour structure | Three pours. Start with 40g for the first pour, then pour evenly in a circular motion for the second and third pours to saturate the entire flat-bottom coffee bed. |
| Brew time | Around 3 minutes |
The longer brew time helps round out the acidity and create a smooth, comforting mouthfeel — especially for the Kenya Gatomboya AB. While both coffees are refreshing enough to enjoy iced, they also show beautiful depth and sweetness when brewed hot.
