It is officially cold brew season, and our summer blend, Natsu Ake, has arrived to the rescue. To celebrate the season (as much as possible), we updated our easy cold brew recipe for everyone to try at home.
Kurasu's New Cold Brew Recipe: 2026 edition

You'll need:
※This recipe makes about 500ml (around 3 servings)
- 50g of coffee beans, or 1 Kurasu Cold Brew Bag
- A container such as Tupperware, a carafe, or a pitcher
*If you are using bottles, make sure they fit in your fridge. - Mesh bag for cold brew (can be substituted with a tea bag)
*Skip this if you are using Kurasu Cold Brew Bag - 600ml of water
Step by Step Guide
- Grind 50g of coffee beans and pack it in a mesh bag.
*For the grind size we recommend grinding slightly finer than your hot filter grind- about as fine as your iced filter grind.
*On a Fellow Ode Grinder Gen2's setting, that would be around #7.0〜#8.0.
*Skip this if you are using Kurasu Cold Brew Bag. - Put the bag you prepared in Step 1 or a Kurasu Cold Brew Bag into a container of choice, and pour 600ml of water.
- Press the bag gently about three times, to make sure that the coffee is evenly saturated with water.
- Leave it in the fridge for about 15 hours. (For example, make it at 5pm and it'll be ready by 8am the next morning.)
- Remove the bag, but do not squeeze the bag. Instead, lift and hold it to let the coffee drain naturally. Store the cold brew in the fridge.
Hints & Tips

Changing the amount of coffee or water
As long as you stick to the bean-to-water ratio (1:12), you can make different amounts of delicious cold brew with no problem.
- Example 1: Coffee 25g: Water 300ml
- Example 2: Coffee 75g: Water 900ml
Adjusting the flavor
If your cold brew turns out too intense, try grinding a little coarser next time- go finer if it's too weak.
The key is to stick to the same ratio and the immersion time and change only one variable at a time- that gives you better control over your brew.
What each component in the recipe does to the final cup

How your cold brew turns out is dictated by three things. If you find yourself wanting to make adjustment to your creation, check the following 3 areas and adjust to your liking.
Grind Size
Grind size has the biggest impact on the cup's flavor and impression.
|
Grind Size |
General characteristics |
When it's too extreme |
|
Fine |
The cup tends to be more intense |
Tends to create fines, causing the texture to be gritty/sandy. Higher risk of bringing out unwanted flavors |
|
Coarse |
The cup tends to be weak or lack definition |
Thin, watery cup, or unbalanced acidity standing out |
Bean to Water Ratio
Bean to water ratio plays a role in the final strength.
|
Ratio |
General characteristics |
When it's too extreme |
|
Larger amount of water |
Refreshing, light, and tea-like strength |
The cup feels too weak |
|
Less water |
Strong, syrup-like strength |
The cup feels too strong (great with milk, though) |
Immersion Time
The length of time the coffee grounds are immersed in water affects the extraction progress.
|
Time |
General characteristics |
When it's too extreme |
|
Long |
Well extracted, thick and syrupy texture |
Higher risk of over-extraction that leads to astringency, etc. |
|
Short |
Clean, refreshing impression |
Higher risk of cutting the extraction process too early before the desirable characteristics are drawn out, resulting in an underwhelming cup |
