Kuroneri/Black clay cup
A matte texture cup made of a non-absorbent clay baked into a dense, durable but lightweight body. The nature of the clay being non-absorbent prevents smells and tastes from the contents to transfer onto the cup.

Shironeri/White clay cup
This cup is made of a revival and a modern interpretation of Hakudei, a clay that was used in Showa era. The color will mellow overtime with use, but if you see any stain that appears to be “too much”, soaking the cup in a diluted bleach overnight helps remove it.

White Glaze
A white porcelain with a hint of glossy blue, that complements green tea- however it is also a great choice for serving sake and tea-time sweets.

White matte
Cup with a non-glossy, smooth surface. Soaking the cup in a diluted bleach and washing it help remove stains if necessary.

Aoneri/Blue clay cup
A hazy, soft blue appears as the colorless glaze touches and reacts with the clay in the kiln. The gentle hue is reminiscent of serene beauty of still water or rain drops resting on new leaves. A wonderful choice to enjoy tea and coffee with your eyes too.

Sumi Kannyu/Crazed Ink

The pattern on the cups are called crazing. The glaze reveals this unique pattern of crack that occurs from how the clay and glaze shrunk in different rate throughout the making process. Then, sumi ink, a charcoal based ink is applied to darken and compliment the crazing across the cup. The crazed ceramics are loved for its ageing process- as you use it it will develop its own crazing and patina of your journey with it.

Apply dishwashing liquid to wash. Do not use abrasive sponges, metal scrubbers, or cleansers to clean as it may damage the surface.

The cups can be stored in refrigerator and freezer. However, please note that a sudden change in the temperature may lead to cracking.

The cups are compatible with microwave and dish washer/drier.

Do not use over a direct fire.

Please kindly understand and embrace the slight variety in size and surface markings made with pottery wheels, as they are hand made and these are what make them unique.

“Shironeri” White clay cup
You may notice there are some patches with orangey hue- it is not a contamination of material nor glazing/paint, but a chemical reaction of the mineral contained in the clay.

Since this is a non-glazed cup, it is susceptible to oil stain. A gentle rubbing with dishwashing liquid can remove it.

“Kuroneri”, “Aoneri” Black clay cup/Blue clay cup

The iron powder contained in the clay sometimes creates dark markings on the surface, but they are not a defect, and is a natural expression of the material that adds character to the cup.

Matte Glaze
This variant has a less glossy glazing applied on the surface. The level of how matte they appear can vary. You may also notice pinholes (a small dent about 1mm in size) on the surface of the product, but it is a natural occurrence during the production process and is not a defect.

As you use, it may develop a fine hairline crack on the glazing (called craze). If a cup is stained through the craze with tea, etc., try soaking the cup in a food-safe bleach.

If printing inks like from newspaper or other dirts transfers to the cup’s surface, they can be removed by an eraser most of the time. If it does not remove the color, please sand gently with a fine sand paper.

Sumi Kannyu/Crazed Glaze

Please note that the Crazed Ink Glaze cannot be washed/dried in dishwasher.

Since the glazing on this cup has multiple crack (crazing) on the surface, please kindly treat the product gently and with care. As the craze allows the color of the liquid that is held inside the cup seep through between its micro-fine lines, the pattern will turn deeper in color as the cup is used overtime. You may notice a "pinging" sound until the initial crazing process settles down, but this is not a sign of defect or cracking.
The crazed ceramics are loved for its ageing process- as you use it it will develop its own patina of your journey with it.

Pre-soaking the cup in water can prevent staining to a certain extent.
